1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge Nova Scotia Finalist Announced

HALIFAX, May 4, 1999 -- Michael Barker, age 16, from Ellershouse, who studies at Hants West Rural High School, has been chosen as the Nova Scotia winner in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. All winners were honoured at an awards ceremony hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, His Honour J. James Kinley and Mrs. Grace Kinley at Government House. Dr. Bridglal Pachai, President, and Marie Hodgson, Vice-President, of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Nova Scotia assisted His Honour with the presentations.

The 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under, and drew approximately 19,000 entries from across Canada. Participants were invited to use their imagination to draw posters that show their pride in Canada by recognizing Canadian heroes. The program is sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The judges for the Nova Scotia Poster Challenge also chose 15 other young people, ranging from 8 to 18 years of age, from around the province, to receive honourable mentions for their posters. They include: Carli Boers, from Mulgrave Education Centre; Ashley Caldwell, from Hants West Rural High School; Jennie De Viller, from Cunard Junior High School; Tyler Frank, from Dr. John C. Wickwire Academy; Nadine Gaudett, from École d'immersion de la Baie Sainte Marie; Corey Isenor, from Riverside Education Centre; Tiffany Larder, from Park View Education Centre; Jolene MacKinnon, from North East Margaree School; Meaghan Martell, from Walter Fougere Junior High/Elementary; Tasha Ramsay, from Millwood High School; Herbie Sakalauskas, from Memorial High School; Bradley Stewart, from McCulloch Junior High School; Joanna Tucker, from Millwood High School; Amy Whitman, from Sackville High School; and Katie Wolf, from St. Mary's Education Centre.

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.
