REGINA, May 6, 1999 -- Maddy Brazill, from St. Pius X School in Regina, has been chosen as the Saskatchewan finalist in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. Joy Pelling, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Saskatchewan, made the announcement today on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps.

The second and third place winners were Farrah Mateen and Sara Ogrodnich, both from Rivier Academy in Prince Albert. Honourable mentions were awarded to Lisa Mann, from Dr. A. E. Perry School; Kindra Majewski, from McLurg School; Jessica Myren, from Ogema School; Xochitl Hanson-Pastran, from Caswell Community School; Andrea Minter, from Rivier Academy; Anita Wandzura, from St. Joseph High School; Vanessa Barkman, from Countryside School; Wayne Lorezel, from McLurg School; Trent Martin-Thomas, from St. Matthew School and Karen Canales, from Evan Hardy Collegiate.

The 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under, and drew 1556 entries from 88 schools across Saskatchewan. Participants were invited to use their imagination to draw posters that show their pride in Canada by recognizing Canadian heroes. The program is sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

"This year's poster challenge was an outstanding success," Ms. Pelling stated. "The Celebrate Canada Committee sincerely appreciates the great support we received from teachers, schools, and school boards throughout Saskatchewan, and commends all entrants for the creativity and thought displayed in their artwork."

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.

Winning Saskatchewan entries for the contest will be on display during the month of May at Canada Place, located in downtown Regina, on the main floor of 2201 11th Avenue, Regina.
