1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge Nunavut Finalist Announced

YELLOWKNIFE, May 11, 1999 -- Lucy Idlout, from the Takijualuk School in Pond Inlet, has been chosen as the Nunavut finalist in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. Tony Whitford, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for the Northwest Territories, made the announcement today on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps.

The second and third place winners were Angela Nuliayok and June Palonguayak, both from Quqshuun Lihakvik School in Gjoa Haven. Honourable mentions were awarded to Mark Ayalik, Alina Balzer Peters, Chelsea Akana, and Kathleen Hanak from Jimmy Hikok Ilihakuik School in Kugluktuk; to Kelly Akpaleapik, Lee Inuarak, Mallory Pewatoalook and Jenny Kunuk from Takijualuk School in Pond Inlet; to David Aglukkag and Paddy Kamookak from Quqshuun Ilihakvik School in Gjoa Haven, and to Amanda Muckpa from Inuujaq School in Arctic Bay who all received special praise for their artwork.

The 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under, and drew approximately 19,000 entries from across Canada. Participants were invited to use their imagination to draw posters that show their pride in Canada by recognizing Canadian heroes. The program is sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The Poster Challenge winners were selected by a committee comprised of Tony Whitford and Sue Heron-Herbert, of the NWT Canada Day Committee; Helen Masagak, Commissioner of the NWT; Inuvialuit Artist Bill Nasogaluak; Nunasi Corporation representative Malaya Rheaume and Cynthia Welna of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

"We had some exceptional entries," said Committee President Whitford. "It was impressive to see the many different ways in which our young people defined Canadian heroism. On behalf of the NWT Celebrate Canada Committee, I want to thank all of the Nunavut participants for sharing with us their vision of Canada, especially in this important first year for the new territory. "

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.
