1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge British Columbia Finalist Announced

VANCOUVER, May 14, 1999 -- Yuting Zhang, age 14, has been chosen as the British Columbia finalist in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. The Celebrate Canada Committee for British Columbia and Canada Place Corporation held a reception today and made the announcement on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps.

The 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under, and drew approximately 19,000 entries from across Canada. Participants were invited to use their imagination to draw posters that show their pride in Canada by recognizing Canadian heroes. The program is sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Inspired by the "Canadian heroes" theme of the poster challenge, Yuting "chose the RCMP because they are the police of Canada and because they have saved a lot of lives. This is why they are my Canadian heroes."

Fifteen year old Christopher Wild finished second with his poster featuring Canadian runner Donovan Bailey. An accomplished artist, musician and athlete, Christopher chose Donovan Bailey "because he is a true Canadian hero in athletics."

The third place winner is sixteen-year-old Emily Pak. Emily's studies include four years of art school. Her poster depicts John A. Macdonald as "a hero who held the key to solving Canada's problems."

A framed copy of Yuting's poster will be presented to the partners/sponsors of the Canada Day Poster Challenge: Global Television, Canada Place Corporation and the Vancouver Canucks.

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.
