1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge Manitoba Finalist Announced

WINNIPEG, May 13, 1999 -- Marilyn Tardif, from Collège Gabrielle Roy in Winnipeg, has been chosen as the Manitoba finalist in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. Deborah Lamont-Zimmer, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Manitoba, made the announcement today on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps.

Tied for second place were Lauren Radford, from Nordale School in Winnipeg and Meagan Simpson, from Nellie McClung Collegiate in Manitou. Third place went to Cathy Jordan, from La Verendrye School in Portage la Prairie. Honourable mentions were awarded to Noy Bounvongxay, from Windsor Park Collegiate; Joel Lussier and Carolyn Kroeker from Lacerte School; Marina Ricard, from St. Claude School Complex; Natalie Collette, from St. Norbert Collegiate; Joanna Graham, from Laidlaw School; Dolma Namgya and Charmaine Rona, from St. Maurice School; Danko Panic, from Montrose School; Caylin Younger, from Valley Garden Junior High; Bryce Strecker, from Edward Schreyer School; Alexandra Labelle, from École Margaret Underhill; Ryan Neepin, from Agassiz School; and Susanna Waldner, from Wellwood School. These students will receive a Celebrate Canada Kit and souvenirs.

The 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under. This year the Challenge attracted 3,800 entries from across Manitoba, and 19,000 entries from across Canada. Participants were invited to use their imagination to draw posters that show their pride in Canada by recognizing Canadian heroes. The program is sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

The Poster Challenge winners were selected by a committee comprised of Deborah Lamont-Zimmer and Guy Préfontaine, of the Manitoba Celebrate Canada Committee; Scott Taylor and Ernie Nairn, of the Poster Challenge Committee; as well as Sharyn Mayberry, of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

"We had some exceptional entries," said Committee President Lamont-Zimmer. "It was impressive to see the many different ways in which our young people defined Canadian heroism. On behalf of the Manitoba Celebrate Canada Committee, I want to thank all of the participants for sharing with us their vision of Canada."

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.
