Minister Copps Announces Names of Presidents and Vice-Presidents and the New Name of the Canada Day Committees

OTTAWA, May 21, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, announced today the names of the Presidents and Vice-Presidents for the 12 Canada Day Committees. The "Celebrate Canada Committees" title was also announced as the new name for these 12 Committees in 1999.

This new name more accurately reflects the expanded mandate and role of the committees under the "Celebrate Canada" initiative. "Celebrate Canada", an annual eleven day celebration, begins on June 21 with National Aboriginal Day, is followed by Saint Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, and ends with Canada Day on July 1. The 12 provincial and territorial Celebrate Canada Committees help organize and promote events in communities across Canada which celebrate during the eleven day period.

"We are very grateful to the Celebrate Canada Committees because through their hard work and commitment, Canadians have an opportunity to express their pride and attachment to Canada", said Minister Copps.
