Minister Copps Announces Names of Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the Celebrate Canada Committees for the Year 2000

OTTAWA, December 14, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, today announced the names of the Celebrate Canada Committee Presidents and Vice-Presidents for the year 2000.

Right across the country, Provincial and Territorial Celebrate Canada Committees, comprised of volunteers, help organize and promote events as part of the 11-day "Celebrate Canada!" calendar of events. The festivities begin with National Aboriginal Day on June 21, continuing with Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, and end with Canada Day on July 1.

"We are proud of the work done by members of the Celebrate Canada Committees. Their efforts and dedication provide Canadians with an excellent opportunity to express their pride and attachment to Canada," said Minister Copps.

The Minister has appointed the following Celebrate Canada Committee Presidents and Vice-Presidents for the year 2000:

Newfoundland and Labrador: Tina Fagan, President; Lorne Humphries, Vice-President;
Nova Scotia: Bridglal Pachai, President; Marie Hodgson, Vice-President;
Prince Edward Island: James Dunn, President; Rose Ellen Ghiz, Vice-President;
New Brunswick : Robert Basque, President; Rachel LeBlanc, Vice-President;
Québec: Serge Savard, President; Francis Fox, Vice-President;
Ontario: David Peterson, President; Kathleen Thomas and Mariette Carrier-Fraser,
Vice-Presidents;
Manitoba: Deborah Lamont, President; Jean-Paul Boily, Vice-President;
Saskatchewan: Joy Pelling, President; Henri Chabanole and Vernice McIntyre, Vice-Presidents;
Alberta: Edna Allwright, President; Helen Rice, Vice-President;
British Columbia: Patrick Nicol, President; Len Lowe, Vice-President;
Northwest Territories: Fred Koe, President; Sue Heron Herbert, Vice-President;
Yukon: Shirley Adamson, President; Akio Saito, Vice-President;
Nunavut: Eliza Kingdon, President; Levinia Brown, Vice-President.

The Minister took this opportunity to thank the Presidents and Vice-Presidents from each province and territory, as well as members and volunteers from the Committees for their dedication and support. "I am confident that the year 2000 "Celebrate Canada!" activities across the country will enjoy great success," concluded the Minister.
