The Société d'aménagement de la Rivière-aux-sables Receives $40,000 to Organize Canada Day Celebrations in Jonquière

JONQUIÈRE, Quebec, June 29, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour, Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, and Member of Parliament (Jonquière), today announced $40,000 in funding for the Société d'aménagement de la Rivière-aux-sables. This funding will be used to organize Canada Day festivities in the municipality of Jonquière in the Saguenay region.

"On July 1, millions of Canadians will take the opportunity to celebrate their country--a country that is the envy of the world, a country rich in history, heritage, and culture," said Minister Oda. "The Department of Canadian Heritage is proud to support Canada Day festivities in Jonquière,"

"As is the custom in this wonderful part of the country, the people of Jonquière have decided to celebrate Canada Day in a big way," said Minister Blackburn. "On behalf of the Government of Canada, I invite young and old alike to join in this celebration and to take advantage of this opportunity to express their pride in being Canadian."

The municipality of Jonquière has organized a number of activities this year to highlight Canada Day. The activities include parades, a fireworks show, and performances for people of all ages.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Celebrate Canada! program, which enhances pride in Canada by encouraging citizens to take part in Celebrate Canada! activities from June 21 to July 1. The celebrations include National Aboriginal Day on June 21, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27, and Canada Day on July 1.
