Government of Canada Renews Contribution to Canadian Television Fund for One Year

OTTAWA, February 22, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced a one-year extension of funding to the Canadian Television Fund (CTF). The federal contribution to the CTF, which supports the production of distinctly Canadian programming, will remain at the current level of $100 million.

The one-year extension is the result of a federal government decision to renew funding for one year for programs that would otherwise come to an end March 31, pending the setting of the government's priorities in the next budget. This interim measure will provide continuity in policy implementation.

"The Canadian Television Fund is a highly successful partnership between government and the private sector," said Minister Copps. "The one-year extension stabilizes the funding for the production of high quality Canadian television throughout the next fiscal year."

Last year the CTF supported 380 television programs and feature films, which helped bring 2,065 hours of new Canadian television programming to the air.

"This funding will enable the CTF to continue its important work in ensuring Canadians have access to their unique stories on television," said Minister Copps.

Information about the Canadian Television Fund, including its 1999-00 activity report, is available on the CTF's website:
