Government of Canada Upholds CRTC Decision Granting Toronto Over-the-Air English-Language Television Licence

OTTAWA, June 5, 2002 -- The Government of Canada today announced its decision (P.C. 2002-966) to uphold the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) decision granting an over-the-air English-language television broadcasting licence to Craig Broadcast Systems Inc. (Craig).

On April 8, 2002, the CRTC licensed Craig to operate an over-the-air English-language television station to serve Toronto, with an additional transmitter in Hamilton. Following CRTC Broadcasting Decision 2002-81, the Governor in Council received several petitions asking that the decision be set aside or referred back to the CRTC for reconsideration and hearing.

Following a review of the petitions, the Government determined that the CRTC's decision did not derogate from the policy objectives of the Broadcasting Act. Under Section 28 of the Broadcasting Act, the Government may refer back or set aside a CRTC licensing decision if that decision derogates from the attainment of the objectives of the broadcasting policy set out in subsection 3(1) of the Act.
