Youth Take Part in Radio Projects in Francophone Minority Environment

ORLEANS, March 18, 2004 -- Eugène Bellemare, Member of Parliament (Orleans-Ottawa), on behalf of the honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the participation of the Government of Canada in the Fondation Radio Enfant radio projects for children and teenagers to experiment broadcasting in Francophone minority environments in Nova Scotia as well in Ontario schools.

"In 2003, more than 15,000 Canadian students participated in the production of radio broadcasts," said Mr. Bellemare. "The Government of Canada's support to the Fondation Radio Enfant will give children and teenagers the opportunity to live the enriching experience of producing radio broadcasts."

"Producing radio broadcasts offers youth a means to develop themselves on a community, social and cultural level," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. " This experience will allow them to participate in enhancing the expression of the Francophone culture within their community as well as to promote their awareness of the linguistic duality of Canadians."

Support of $41,750 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Support of Official Language Communities Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
