Government Upholds CRTC Licences for Pay Audio Services

OTTAWA, October 11, 1996 Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that the Government has upheld four pay audio licences granted by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).

The four services are DMX Canada, Power Music Choice, Allegro and Galaxie. Each applicant will be required to carry 30 per cent of Canadian musical content on the Canadian-programmed part of the pay-audio service and to have 25 percent of the Canadian vocal channels in French.

All four companies are Canadian-owned and controlled. DMX Canada and Power Music Choice have minority US partners.

In announcing the Government's decision to uphold the four licences, the Minister noted that she has received voluntary undertakings from Power Music Choice and DMX Canada to exceed the Canadian content requirement set by the CRTC.

We are satisfied that these new audio services will support the cultural and linguistic objectives of the Broadcasting Act, Ms. Copps said. The new services will generate new jobs and create more outlets for Canadian musical expression in both official languages.
