Announcement of the Winners of the "Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt"

HULL, July 20, 2000 -- Canadian Heritage Parliamentary Secretary Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps, today announced the winners of the "Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt" at a ceremony at the National Aviation Museum.

"The Treasure Hunt was an opportunity for young Canadians to visit a wide variety of Canadian museums on the Internet. They set off on a virtual adventure of discovery that took them across the country where they learned of Canada's rich heritage and our shared history," said Mr. Bélanger.

Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps launched the Treasure Hunt last May as a kick-off to International Museum Day activities. The Treasure Hunt challenged Canadian children aged eight to 12 years to discover 23 museums through the Internet and complete a virtual crossword puzzle. More than 2,000 children completed the puzzle between May 12 nd July 1.

The first place winner, Laurence Leroux-Lapierre from Cantley, Quebec, received a computer system. The second place winner, Alpha Balebela, from Toronto, Ontario, received a printer. The third place winner, Christiana Peterson from Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, received a gift certificate. All prizes were provided by TELUS.

"We are pleased to be associated with the Department of Canadian Heritage in this initiative that encourages Canadians to embrace new technologies. TELUS believes strongly in the power of the Internet to help Canadians learn more about each other," said the Regional Vice President of Telus, Michael P. Martin.
