Minister Sheila Copps Announces the Winners of the Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt

OTTAWA, June 20, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the winners of the Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt. The interactive game was an initiative to highlight International Museum Day, held on May 18.

"I am very happy to see young people showing interest in museums and our heritage," said Minister Copps. "Canadian museums play an important role in our society. They are the guardians of our heritage and a reflection of our diversity. They present a view of our history, the arts, the sciences and nature, as well as the accomplishments of Canadians and people abroad. It is important to emphasize the role played by our museums and the Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt enabled us to do that among young Canadians."

The winners were chosen at random by computer. They are:

Sarah Deschamps, 9, from Saint-Antonin de Rivière-de-Loup, Quebec
Marc Gauvreau's grade three class from the Grand Boisé school in Chelsea, Quebec
Peter George Irving, 15, from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

These three winners will receive computers valued at approximately $2,000 each.

The partners in the Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt were the Historica Foundation of Canada, who promoted it; Telus et Northern Micro, who sponsored the prizes for the winners; and the Virtual Museum of Canada, who presented the game on its Internet site.

The contest took place in May and was open to young Canadians at the primary and secondary levels. More than 2,300 students visited the Canadian Museum Treasure Hunt Internet site. The game is still accessible to young people at the Virtual Museum of Canada at www.virtualmuseum.ca.
