The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Maison Saint-Gabriel

VERDUN, July 12, 2002 -- Liza Frulla, Member of Parliament (Verdun-Saint-Henri-Saint-Paul-Pointe Saint-Charles), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $22,000 for Maison Saint-Gabriel to fund promotional activities in the context of the re-opening of the Lachine Canal.

"Since its re-opening, the Lachine Canal and its associated activities have contributed significantly to the recreo-touristic development of southwestern Montréal. In this context, Maison Saint-Gabriel can reinforce its status as a major tourist attraction in this section of town and increase its influence as a cultural centre," said Liza Frulla. "I would like to warmly thank all those who daily help make Maison Saint-Gabriel a true oasis of living history."

Originally a farmhouse, Maison Saint-Gabriel is a beautiful example of 17th-century architecture. It was declared a nationally significant monument in 1965 and was restored and turned into a museum in 1966.

The promotional project focuses on a media communications campaign. Promotional tools such as flyers, posters, and banners will be produced and distributed in strategic locations. Historical activities will be presented at the Lachine Canal site, creating "historic" ties to Maison Saint-Gabriel. All these actions will be coordinated in partnership with the Parks Canada Lachine Canal National Historic Site.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Organizational Development component of its Museums Assistance Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
