The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Banc-de-Pêche-de-Paspébiac historic site

GASPÉ, August 5, 2002 -- Georges Farrah, Member of Parliament (Bonaventure-Gaspé-Iles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $12,000 for the Banc-de-Pêche-de-Paspébiac historic site, for the expansion of its museological mandate.

"The Banc-de-Paspébiac site is a major attraction in the Gaspé. It is recognized as a nationally important historic site by the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. This recognition demonstrates the quality and value of the heritage resources it offers," said Mr. Farrah. "I would like to congratulate everyone in the region who has contributed to the constant improvement of one of the Gaspé's greatest treasures."

This funding will support a project that comprises four distinct objectives: to define and apply conservation standards for the collections; to prepare a maintenance manual; to further define a classification system; and to define research foci connected to the themes of the site.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Organizational Development component of its Museums Assistance Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
