Minister Copps Announces Funding for the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust

CHARLOTTETOWN, July 26, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $26,400 for the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust to produce and circulate an exhibit of visual records of Prince Edward Island harbours and shorelines.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that supports cultural institutions. Cultural exhibits are reflections of our cultural diversity and bridge the gap between the past and the present. Adapting and touring this exhibit across Canada will allow more Canadians to discover and appreciate Prince Edward Island history and culture," said Minister Copps.

The project covers the planning, production and touring of the exhibit, based on a collection of Department of Public Works documents about the shoreline, which date from 1880 to 1936. It will consist of historical of maps and photos of Prince Edward Island harbours and shorelines that speak to the history of settlement in Canada and the shaping of the Canadian coastline. It will also include an audio-video presentation and a Web version. The exhibit will open in September 2002 and will tour museums in New Brunswick and Saskatchewan until 2003.
The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this financial support through the Access and National Outreach chapter of its Museum Assistance Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
