The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Wapekeka First Nation

WAPEKEKA, August 2, 2002 -- Rober Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora-Rainy River), today announced, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, $37,000 in funding for the Wapekeka First Nation Cultural Interpretive Centre Organizations Study.

"Aboriginal arts and culture have been and remain a fundamental element of Canadian culture. They are the foundation upon which Canada's diversity is built," said Mr. Nault. "Preserving Aboriginal culture and encouraging its full expression promote economic development and help build pride among Aboriginal communities and all Canadians."

Wapekeka First Nation's Cultural Interpretive Centre Organizational Study will complement the work already completed by Wapekeka First Nation toward establishing a culturally relevant historical interpretive centre. The study will identify a framework for heritage planning as well as for the management of the Centre. This will include operational, capital and financial projections, as well as marketing strategies and collections management policies.

The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this support through the Aboriginal Museum Development chapter of its Museums Assistance Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
