Minister Copps Announces Appointment to Canadian Museum of Nature

OTTAWA, August 6, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Charmaine Crooks, of North Vancouver, to the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Nature, for a three-year term.

Ms. Crooks represented Canada in international athletics from 1980 to 1997. A five-time Olympian, she was a silver medallist at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and the 1994 Commonwealth Games. She has also acted as host and analyst on a variety of television programs for major Canadian and U.S. television networks.

This year, Ms. Crooks co-chaired a federal government task force on financing for amateur sport in Canada. From 1994 she has been President of NGU Consultants Inc., a sports marketing, promotion and production company; and since 2001 she has been Director, Business Development, for Sussex Strategy Group. Ms. Crooks has served on the boards of many professional and community organizations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1999. As a founding member of the Independent IOC Ethics Commission from 1999 to 2001, she assisted in developing the Code of Ethics for the IOC.

Ms. Crooks is the recipient of many awards, including the Governor General's Award for community services and the John F. Basset Award for outstanding community work and sporting excellence.

The Canadian Museum of Nature is an important federal cultural organization dedicated to increasing, throughout Canada and internationally, interest in, knowledge of, and appreciation and respect for the natural world.
