The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Pointe-à-Callière Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History

MONTRÉAL, August 6, 2002 -- Lucienne Robillard, Treasury Board Chair and Member of Parliament (Westmount-Ville-Marie), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $118,000 for the Pointe-à-Callière Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History, to fund its exhibit on the history of the Lachine Canal and the launch of its fundraising campaign, which will run from 2002 to 2005.

"I would like to congratulate the management of the Pointe-à-Callière Museum for the exceptional work that this institution has done since its foundation. It has allowed members of the public to develop a taste for our history and heritage and to increase their knowledge and understanding," said Ms. Robillard.

The first $90,000 is for the preparation of a bilingual exhibition on the Lachine Canal. This exhibition will trace the history of the Lachine Canal and its major role in the development of Montréal and Canada, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It will be presented at Pointe-à-Callière from October 15, 2003 until the end of March 2004, and will then be available to tour other Canadian museums.

The remaining $28,000 has been provided for a fundraising campaign, to be held from 2002 to 2005. This support will finance the production of communications tools and the training of volunteers for their role as fundraisers. The project will allow for strategic planning initiatives to support the Museum's long-term financial stability.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Access and National Outreach and Organizational Development components of its Museums Assistance Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
