Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Canadian Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives

MONTRÉAL, October 15, 2002 -- President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Member of Parliament (Westmount--Ville--Marie) Lucienne Robillard, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $181,135
for the Canadian Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that is committed to digitizing and preserving such important cultural and historical documents and photographs. It is important to be able to share such great contributions to our nation with everyone," said Ms. Robillard. "This funding will help create an on-line Jewish Virtual Museum that is accessible by national and international audiences."

The announced funding will further the original efforts of the Congregation Shaar Hashomayim of Montreal as thousands of original documents, artifacts and photographs are digitized and placed in a new virtual museum. The focus of the project is on both Anglophone and Francophone congregants who have made important contributions to Canadian history and society.

The Canadian Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives will provide important material for students, teachers, researchers and professionals. Canadians will now have access to an important cultural collection that chronicles the history and growth of Canada as a nation.

The amount of Francophone cultural content that is available on the Internet will be augmented by highlighting the contributions of French-speaking congregants. To learn more about the Canadian Jewish Virtual Museum and Archives, visit www.cjvma.org

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
