Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Musée de la rivière Cascapédia

NEW CARLISLE, May 7, 2003 -- Georges Farrah, Member of Parliament (Bonaventure-Gaspé-Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $15,000 for the Musée de la Rivière Cascapédia to help finance the digitization of its collections, which includes more than 900 artifacts and 500 archival photographs.

"The Government of Canada is proud to help the Museum use new technologies to promote its collections on the history of recreational fishing on the Cascapedia River," said Mr. Farrah. "I would like to thank the museum's directors for this project that will offer the public privileged access to the museum's collections, and will share the region's history."

The digitization of these artifacts will also enable this young museum to share its collections with other museums across the country and will reach the majority of Canadians through the Canadian Heritage Information Network.

The Musée de la Rivière Cascapedia was inaugurated in June 2000. Its artifacts and photographs present an overview of the economic and cultural development of this region of the Gaspé.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Organizational Development branch of its Museums Assistance Program.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
