The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Sakewewak First Nations Arts Collective Inc.

REGINA, June 4, 2003 -- Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $27,700 in funding for the Sakewewak First Nations Arts Collective, to help finance its 2004 Multi-Disciplinary Festival.

"By presenting senior Aboriginal storytellers, writers, and artists, the Sakewewak First Nations Arts Collective brings Aboriginal arts to new audiences and invigorates age-old artistic traditions," said Mr. Goodale. "The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring the development of artistic expression and fostering access to Canada's cultural life."

The 2004 Multi-Disciplinary Festival will offer a programme featuring contemporary and traditional Aboriginal storytellers, writers and artists. This funding will enable organizers to document the Festival in audio and video and leave a legacy of historical knowledge and contemporary expression. Presentations will be held in Regina and in rural and First Nations communities.

Funding is provided under the Aboriginal Museum Development component of the Museums Assistance Program (MAP). The Museums Assistance Program (MAP) provides financial support to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.

Program guidelines are available on the Department of Canadian Heritage Web site under "Financial Programs" at http://www.canadianheritage.gc.ca

Funding for this project was provided for in the February, 2003 federal budget.
