Government of Canada announces financial support for Cinémathèque québécoise

MONTRÉAL, August 13, 2003 -- Yvon Charbonneau, Member of Parliament (Anjou Rivière-des-Prairies), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $98,500 for Cinémathèque québécoise. An initial amount of $68,500 will be allocated to help the organization establish a fundraising foundation. A second contribution of $30,000 will support a project to help the organization improve and manage its collection of Canadian films.

"Cinémathèque québécoise has been a leader in the Canadian cultural sector for
40 years," said Mr. Charbonneau. "Thanks to this institution, Canadians can benefit from access to a diverse collection of material relating to the Canadian and international film scene. Cinémathèque has introduced generations of young Canadians to the expressive possibilities of film in all its forms. The Government of Canada is proud to contribute to this organization and to help ensure its future."

As part of its 40th anniversary, Cinémathèque québécoise will establish a foundation to carry out a variety of fundraising strategies. Funds collected by the foundation will enable Cinémathèque to proceed with projects such as technology integration, collection upgrading, and educational resource development.

Cinémathèque will also continue to catalogue and enhance its collection of Canadian films and television programs. Cinémathèque's collections include more than 35 000 international films from all eras, 25 000 television programs, 28 000 posters, 600 000 photos, 2000 pieces of equipment, 15 000 scripts and production documents, 45 000 books, 3000 magazine titles, and thousands of files covering a wide variety of subjects.

Founded in 1963 by a group of filmmakers, Cinémathèque québécoise preserves and documents film and television heritage in order to make it available to ever-growing and diverse audiences.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP) and its Museums Assistance Program (MAP). The CAHSP's objective is to support modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. This national program improves conditions for cultural organizations in local Canadian communities. The MAP provides financial support to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.

Funding for these initiatives was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
