Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

VICTORIA, November 28, 2003 -- David Anderson, Minister of the Environment and Member of Parliament (Victoria), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $80,000 for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

"Art galleries play a vital role in the preservation and promotion of Canadian culture," said Minister Anderson. "The Government of Canada is pleased to support this project which will assist the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in its efforts to create a secure environment for its valuable collections."

The Museums Assistance Program supports projects which tell Canadian stories and promote inter-provincial perspectives such as travelling exhibitions, collaborative initiatives and partnerships.

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is one of the major art museums in British Columbia. Its collection of 17,000 works includes one of the most important and comprehensive Asian art collections in Canada. This funding will ensure the long term conservation, preservation and management of the gallery collections. Using traditional and new technologies, the project will increase accessibility to the gallery's current artworks, improve storage efficiency and allow greater flexibility for the mounting of travelling exhibitions.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museums Assistance Program. The Museums Assistance Program (MAP) provides financial support to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 budget.
