Government of Canada Supports London Regional Children's Museum

LONDON, November 8, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (London West) Sue Barnes, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister Responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $100,000 in funding for the London Regional Children's Museum. The funds will enable the organization to transform an existing atrium and outdoor amphitheatre into a multi-purpose space.

"This new facility will provide extra space where children and adults can explore and play together," said Ms. Barnes. "To inspire our children, we must give them a chance to expand their knowledge in a place where they can have a great time."

"When we invest in our arts and cultural organizations, we support creation and innovation," said Minister Frulla. "This funding will give both young and young-at-heart the chance to discover and enjoy our culture's richness and diversity."

The London Regional Children's Museum was established in 1975 as Canada's first "hands-on" museum. It now has 18 staff and 200 volunteers and accommodates 130,000 visitors annually. Of this number, 30,000 are served through the museum's various outreach programs.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage's Cultural Space Program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and also improves physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. It is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year with $207 million in funding.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
