Appointments to National Gallery Board of Directors

OTTAWA, November 30, 1995 Canadian Heritage Minister Michel Dupuy today announced the appointment of Donald R. Sobey, Merla Beckerman and Margaret J. Baile to the Board of Directors of the National Gallery of Canada for a term of three years.

Mr. Sobey, of Trenton, Nova Scotia, is chairman of Empire Company Ltd. and director of several companies, including Atlantic Shopping Centres Ltd. and Crombie Insurance (U.K.) Ltd. He has been Governor of Olympic Trust of Canada, a member of the Burns Commission and a member of the Board of Governors, Dalhousie University.

Ms. Beckerman, who lives in West Vancouver, British Columbia, is a member of the Board of Trustees of Vancouver Art Gallery and a member of the Board of Trustees of Arts Umbrella, a school for visual and performing arts for young people. She is also founder and co-partner of the Contemporary Arts Collections and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Craft Museum and an adviser to the Vancouver Opera Society.

Ms. Baile, of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, is the owner of the Arctic Art Gallery Ltd., which is one of the largest art galleries in the Canadian north. She has contributed to the cultural life of Yellowknife by organizing an annual Dinner Art Show. Her gallery, specializing in native and northern art, supports over 30 artists.
