Government of Canada Supports Yukon Museums and Heritage Institutions

WHITEHORSE, November 25, 1999 -- Senator Ione Christensen, on behalf of
Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced grants totalling $83,000 to three Yukon museum and heritage institutions under the Museums Assistance Program.

"This announcement demonstrates the importance of partnerships between the Government of Canada and its cultural institutions and I am pleased to see this," said Senator Christensen. "Museums and galleries represent havens of discovery and learning for Canadians and are a vital part of the legacy we leave to our children, connecting them to their heritage and their history."

The Yukon Department of Tourism received a grant of $23,000 for a project to develop a database that will provide access to Yukon cultural heritage contained in collections and institutions outside the Yukon. The Teslin Tlingit Council received $50,000 for the development of a business and marketing plan for a heritage centre. The Yukon Historical Museums Association received $10,000 to assist Yukon museums to access professional development activities.

These grants were awarded under the Museums Assistance Program (MAP) which provides $9.4 million annually to assist Canada's professional museums and related institutions. The MAP was established to increase public access to museum collections and to assist in the management and preservation of their resources.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
