Government of Canada Announces Grants for the Centre d'exposition de l'université de Montréal

MONTRÉAL, December 29, 1999 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, the Honourable Martin Cauchon, Minister of National Revenue and Secretary of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec), today announced a grant of $190,000 to the Centre d'exposition de l'Université de Montréal for the organization of two exhibitions.

"This announcement demonstrates the importance of partnerships between the Government of Canada and its cultural institutions," said Mr. Cauchon. "Museums and galleries represent havens of discovery and learning for Canadians and are a vital part of the legacy we leave to our children, connecting them to their heritage and their history."

The Centre d'exposition de l'Université de Montréal will receive $110,000 for its Mathematics 2000 travelling exhibition and $80,000 for the creation of the virtual exhibition Curious Universe. The Mathematics 2000 travelling exhibition is geared toward the general public so they can discover the place of mathematics in daily life and its use in Canadian society. It will tour Canada for five years. The virtual exhibition Curious Universe which will be featured on the exhibition centre's Web site, will focus on the historic and scientific development of discipline classification systems pertaining to the Université de Montréal's collections.

Grants were awarded under the Museums Assistance Program (MAP), which provides $9.4 million annually in financial assistance to Canada's professional museums and related institutions. This represents an increase of $2 million over the amount provided in 1998-99. MAP was established in the early 1970s to increase public access to museum collections and to assist in the management and preservation of their resources.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
