Canada's New Government Supports Aero Space Museum of Calgary

CALGARY, August 21, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Art Hanger, Member of Parliament (Calgary-Northeast) today announced that the Government of Canada will provide support to the Aero Space Museum Association of Calgary for a project to modernize its collections policy according to current museum standards. This project will help increase public access to the museum's collections.
"Museums like the Aero Space Museum of Calgary are integral to preserving the legacy of communities all across Canada," said Minister Oda. "All Canadians, and especially our young people, need to have access to museums to better understand Canada's rich and diverse history."

"Canada's new Government is pleased to support this project," said Art Hanger. "I commend the Aero Space Museum on its commitment to ensuring that local residents and visitors to the area will have a chance to discover Western-Canadian contributions in aviation and space."

The museum receives over 36,000 visitors annually and is the major regional aviation museum in southern Alberta, charged with the preservation, study, and interpretation of the region's role in the development of aviation in Alberta and Western Canada. The museum will use the services of a collections policy specialist to assess and redesign its outdated collections policy to conform to regional, national, and international standards. This project will lay the foundation for greater public access to the museum's collection so that present and future generations will have more opportunities to learn about Western cultural and military history.

Financial assistance in the amount of $21,500 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museums Assistance Program. This program provides financial support to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to our collective heritage.
