Government of Canada Helps Centre Culturel Franco-manitobain Upgrade its Presentation Spaces

WINNIPEG,January 6, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Saint Boniface) Raymond Simard, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women the Honourable Liza Frulla, today announced $279,000 in funding for the Centre culturel franco-manitobain. The funds will enable the Centre to renovate and modernize its arts presentation spaces, and acquire specialized equipment.

"For 30 years now, the Centre culturel franco-manitobain has offered varied cultural programs to both the English- and French-speaking communities in Manitoba," said Mr. Simard. "By investing in the Centre's facilities, we are increasing opportunities to promote the talent of our creative people."

"Our government understands the importance of preserving and upgrading our creation and presentation spaces. I am very happy to be associated with this project that will bring together many groups and enhance the development of the artistic community in Manitoba," added Minister Frulla.

The funding announced today will support the purchase of specialized equipment and the renovation of two multi-use spaces in the Centre: the Salle Pauline-Boutal and the Salle Antoine-Gaborieau. Part of the Centre will also be converted into a dance studio and an area for workshops. The renovations will facilitate the presentation of more diverse artistic programming.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. The program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts and media arts, and that improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
