Government of Canada Supports Centre R.I.R.E. 2000

QUÉBEC CITY, January 6, 2005 -- Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament (Outremont) Jean-C. Lapierre, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $67,194 in funding for the Centre R.I.R.E. 2000. The funds will enable the organization to launch a campaign raising awareness of cultural diversity and racism issues among young people in the Québec City area, and to develop a multicultural-themed Web site.

"The Centre R.I.R.E. 2000 is committed to promoting the importance of diversity within our society," said Minister Lapierre. "The campaign and Web site will help our young people better understand the issues related to the fight against racism."

"Multiculturalism is a key component of our country," said Minister Frulla. "I am delighted to support the Centre, which day by day helps build a society in which all can flourish and achieve their dearest dreams."

The Centre R.I.R.E. 2000 will receive $27,831 for an awareness campaign targeting 3000 young people aged 5 to 19, in playgrounds and schools. The campaign will include a music and dance competition highlighting cultural diversity and the fight against racism. The peak of the campaign will coincide with the Action Week Against Racism and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Funding of $39,363 will go to the Centre for the development of a Web site. This site will feature biographies of members of the Black community who can serve as role models for young Canadians across the country.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Multiculturalism Program and the Gateway Fund, part of the Canadian Culture Online strategy.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
