Government of Canada Supports Internet Presence for the Canadian Hearing Society

TORONTO,January 11, 2005 -- Minister of State (Public Health) and Member of Parliament (St. Paul's) Carolyn Bennett, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $47,500 in funding for the Canadian Hearing Society. The funds will allow the Society to develop its own Web site.

"This new Web site will use the latest technology to engage Canadians in a discussion of issues of importance to the Deaf community," said Dr. Bennett. "Internet users, and especially Deaf youth, can use this site to share their ideas, dreams and values."

"I am delighted that the Deaf community will have a stronger online presence," said Minister Frulla. "Initiatives that encourage dialogue and communication in all its forms are essential if we are to build a society in which all citizens have an equal opportunity to express themselves."

The Web site will use a newly developed video linking technology. The SignEd technology will produce accurate printed translations of sign language.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Gateway Fund of the Canadian Culture Online strategy. This strategy encourages a uniquely Canadian presence on the Internet.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
