HMCS Halifax crew run for wishes

By Lt(N) Amy O’Reilly, Assistant Marine Systems Engineer, HMCS Halifax

HALIFAX -- On June 13, two teams of sailors from HMCS Halifax started a five-day run across Nova Scotia to raise money for the Children’s Wish Foundation, Nova Scotia Chapter.

Runners began at 9 a.m. at a local school, with hundreds of kids cheering them on, waving homemade banners and posters.  After the children and team sang O Canada, the first runner started.  The participating crew ran 5 km legs throughout the day, finishing up each evening at 7 p.m.

After five days of running, crew of HMCS Halifax arrive at the dockyard. The run raised $13,000 for the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation.

On the last day, the team arrived in Halifax and ran to the ship through the dockyard.  There, the ship’s company lined the jetty, awaiting their arrival. Once onboard, the Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Brian Santarpia presented a cheque on behalf of the ship’s company to the Children’s Wish Foundation for $13,000.  Also in attendance were members of the Children’s Wish Foundation and several wish children.

A special presentation was made on behalf of the Children’s Wish Foundation to Chief Petty Officer 1st Class John Chapman, who initiated both HMCS Halifax’s “Run Nova Scotia” and HMCS St.John’s’ recent “Run the Rock”.

To date, HMCS Halifax has raised over $20,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation, Nova Scotia Chapter.
