Organization

CFB Esquimalt is Canada’s west coast naval base. It is a part of the Maritime Command (Navy) element of the Canadian Forces and is home to the Joint Task Force Pacific Commander.

The Base Commander, Captain(N) Mike Williamson, exercises administrative control over the personnel and units assigned to him and other commanding officers. He is responsible for the provision of support services, not only to integral and lodger units, but to all Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC) ships; he is also the landlord for CFB Esquimalt's 10,300 acres and 1,500 buildings.

Reporting to the Base Commander are administration, personnel, comptroller, engineering, operations/security, public affairs, supply and technical services organizations.  As well, the Queen's Harbour Master (QHM) is the Transport Canada designated Harbour Authority for Esquimalt Harbour.

Base Services

Accommodation and transportation services are available. The Wardroom (officers), Chief and Petty Officers mess, Bernays and Nelles Block (junior ranks) can house 1,227 personnel (total). An intra-base bus service and harbour ferry connect the various elements of the base.

Other services provided by the base include police, fire, ambulance, postal, legal, social work and chaplains. The Canadian Forces Exchange system (CANEX) operates various outlets and stores for service members and DND civilian employees. The Morale, Recreation and Welfare programmes are administered through the Personel Support Program unit, incorporating recreation and fitness programs which make use of the gym, pool, squash courts, weight room and arena. The base library has a large selection of books, films and videos. The base newspaper, The Lookout, publishes every week.
