Approvals

Welcome to Measurement Canada’s Approvals information page. Every measuring instrument (e.g. scale, gasoline dispenser, electricity & natural gas meters) used as the basis for a financial transaction must be evaluated by Measurement Canada and approved for use in Canada. The purpose of this evaluation is to ensure the measuring instrument is capable of measuring accurately through-out its service life time.

Background information:

    • Notice of Approval Database - A directory of all the devices approved for use in trade in Canada.
    • About Notice of Approval - A description of the design, composition, construction and performance of a given model, type or class of a measuring device.
    • Approval Process - A detailed account of how a device is approved.
    • Approval Services Laboratory - The Approval Services Laboratory, part of Measurement Canada, evaluates and tests measuring instruments intended for use in trade, to ensure that they comply with the Acts and Regulations.
    • Approval Forms - A complete listing of our Approval forms. Approval begins by submitting the application applicable to your measuring instrument.
    • Directory of Technical Coordinators - A list of contact that can provide information on the legal requirements applicable to a specific measuring instrument.
    • Canada/United States Mutual Recognition of Type Evaluation Program - A bilateral agreement whereby one country recognizes the examination and test of certain instrument types performed by the other country.
