Description

Since 2000, Toronto-based Sharon Switzer has been combining video and text to create arresting works of pathos, meditation, and often, humour. Her series Falling From Grace (2005), uses light as a metaphor for searching, stumbling, and generally making one’s way through life. In Gravity, the fourth part of the series, a list of platitudes flow down the length of a fantastical waterfall that combines a mass-produced ‘light moving photograph’ with footage of Niagara Falls. The texts, both amusing and degrading, set against the false bucolic backdrop, serve to remind the viewer of those mundane, but ultimately grounding moments that make up a life. Within Switzer’s snow globe sculpture, a screen displays a video loop of a snow globe being shaken over and over again, in an obsessive and ill-fated attempt to keep the magic alive. In Swtizer’s words, “the promised, but never delivered, fantasy that is represented by the waterfall in Gravity is now hermetically sealed to maintain freshness.”
