The Child and Family Services Review Board provides an appeal mechanism under the Child and Family Services Act (CFSA) and the Education Act (EA). Upon receipt of applications, the Board makes decisions on the following matters: residential placement of a child; admission of a child to emergency secure treatment facilities; refusal by a director to approve a proposed adoption placement; refusal of the disclosure of information relative to an adoption; expulsion of a student by a school board. Operating independently, the Board is required to make orders on the matters that it reviews. The Board is accountable to the Minister of Children and Youth Services and the Minister of Education.

Custody Review Board The Custody Review Board was established in November 1985 to provide access for young persons, in places of custody and detention, to an independent review mechanism of decisions affecting their placement. It seeks to involve youth in the reasoning behind the decisions made concerning them. The Board reviews the decisions of Provincial Directors, ensuring accountability for administrative decision making. The Board functions under the Federal Youth Criminal Justice Act proclaimed on April 1, 2003 and is accountable to the Minister of Children and Youth Services and the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
