Overview
Hydro One has announced a unified energy efficiency business incentive program with the Coalition of Large Distributors (CLD). Pilot programs started in October of 2005 as part of the Ontario Conserves initiative and the CLD program ramped up through the year as all the members signed on. The programs provide various types of incentives to a maximum of $50,000 in reimbursements for capital expenditures on energy-efficient technologies. There are scheduled dollar incentives tied to specific equipment purchases or applicants can apply for custom projects undertaking unique energy efficiency projects.
Funding is limited and available on a first-come first-served basis with application deadlines, so you may want to obtain pre-approval to ensure that incentives are available for your project (some of the programs are only on a pre-approval basis). Please note that a few of the programs are closed, but keep watching for news as additional rounds of funding may be announced.
Program Objectives
In April of 2004, Ontario announced a target of reducing electricity demand by 5% by 2007. This program is part of the Ontario Conserves initiative and helps businesses better manage their energy consumption and contribute to the Province’s overall conservation objectives.
Who can apply?
Institutional, industrial and commercial customers can apply (Hydro One includes agricultural and forestry customers). Most programs have a minimum demand requirement of 50 kW. Customers must apply through their local utility. The programs have various eligibility guidelines. Please check your utility for details (see the table below for a list of utilities.) You may also apply for Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) funding and are encouraged to do so. All sources of funding are considered in determining the amount of your incentive under these programs.
We will expand the list of links as information becomes available, but the ones below cover about 70% of customers in Ontario. If your utility is not listed below, visit your local utility's website to see if an alternative energy efficiency business program is available.
