CALEDONIA NEGOTIATIONS TO RESUME
Ontario Court of Appeal Clarifies Earlier Court Order In Land Dispute
TORONTO - The Ontario Government will move immediately to restart negotiations with Canada and the Haudenosaunee/Six Nations leadership aimed at peacefully resolving the ongoing land dispute in Caledonia, Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant and Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs David Ramsay announced today.
"Today, the Court of Appeal heard the province's motion for a stay of Justice David Marshall's August 8 court ruling," Bryant said. "The Court has reserved its decision, however it did clarify that as Justice Marshall's written order released last week doesn't refer to negotiations, we are free to return to the table. Our experienced Crown counsel did an excellent job presenting the government's position."
"We now have a clear course of action," said Ramsay. "We believe that negotiations are the best option for a peaceful resolution to the situation in Caledonia. We have made progress and we are optimistic that by working with the federal government and the Haudenosaunee/Six Nations leadership, we will move forward in resolving the outstanding issues. Negotiations will resume immediately."
On August 25, the Court of Appeal will rule on the Crown's motion to stay Justice Marshall's decision pending the hearing of the appeal.
On September 25 and 26, the Court of Appeal is scheduled to hear the Crown's appeal.
