Delivering safe, high-quality food at home and abroad

Through the Agricultural Policy Framework (APF), federal, provincial and territorial governments have committed themselves to help the agriculture and agri-food sector manage their risks and be more competitive and profitable. The Canadian Food Safety and Quality Program is a key part of the APF that will enhance Canada's reputation as a producer of safe, high-quality food products.

The Food Safety Initiative

The Food Safety Initiative (FSI) is one element of the Canadian Food Safety and Quality Program, and includes three components: Implementation, Outreach and Research and Development.

  • Implementation (FSI Grant Program): provides direct grants to non-federally registered food processing plants to support the adoption of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems.

  • Outreach (GMP/HACCP Advantage Pilot Project): consists of GMP and HACCP pilot projects and the development of food safety resources.

    Important Reminder:
    GMP/HACCP Advantage Pilot Projects
Applications and supporting documents will be accepted
until 4:00 pm on Friday October 20, 2006.

  • Research and Development: supports the research and development of Traceability and Surveillance systems.

In Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) is responsible for managing the programs associated with each of the components.
