TORONTO — The Ontario government is encouraging young people to address issues of discrimination, racism and intolerance by funding a Holocaust Memorial Award program initiated and delivered by the UJA Federation Holocaust Centre of Toronto, with the support of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Mike Colle announced today.
“Ontario is a diverse province. We have a vested interest in helping young people to be active in reducing intolerance and supporting mutual respect,” said Minister Colle. “This award program will give young people an opportunity to better understand the impact of the Holocaust and by extension other genocides.”
Ontario students in grades 8 to 12 will be eligible to participate in a creative writing and art contest to express lessons learned from the Holocaust. The government is providing $12,000 in funding to the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Holocaust Memorial Centre of Toronto to deliver the program.
“On behalf of the Holocaust Centre of Toronto, UJA Federation and Canadian Jewish Congress Ontario Region, we are honoured by the opportunity to partner with the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration to teach our children about the consequences of indifference in the face of intolerance and hatred,” said Holocaust Centre Chair Lorraine Sandler and CJC Ontario Region Chair Joel Richler. “We are confident that this partnership will go a long way toward instructing Ontario’s youth that a society based on mutual respect and understanding is the only path to a peaceful future.”- 30 -
