HANOVER LANDFILL EXPANSION TO UNDERGO ENVIRONMENTAL
ASSESSMENT
TORONTO – The Town of Hanover and the Municipality
of Brockton can proceed with an environmental assessment to study
a possible expansion of the Hanover landfill.
The environment minister has approved the municipalities’ terms of
reference, the initial stage in the environmental assessment process
to determine the potential natural, social and economic impacts of
the proposed expansion.
During the environmental assessment process, the municipalities will
undertake more than 10 studies to assess potential impacts to groundwater,
including municipal and private wells and the Saugeen River.
The proponents also intend to increase their waste diversion activities.
In 2005, the communities conducted a study to evaluate potential
waste disposal alternatives and technologies for the next 20 years.
Local residents will have opportunities to comment on the proposed
expansion throughout the environmental assessment process.
