A Groundwater Monitoring Network and Partnership for Ontario

Prepared by the Environmental Monitoring and Reporting Branch, Ministry of the Environment, in cooperation with S. Singer (consultant) and the Waterloo Centre for Groundwater Research
Toronto 2001 Ontario

Groundwater is a major source of water supply for agricultural, commercial, industrial, municipal and residential uses, and it is critical for the survival of fish and aquatic life in Ontario's watercourses. A review of existing groundwater monitoring programs within the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) was undertaken by the Environmental Monitoring and Reporting Branch. The review affirmed the need for a comprehensive groundwater database for Ontario to characterize the location, quality and sustainable yield of the resource and describe where, how, and why the resource is changing.

The new Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network, currently under construction, will provide such a database. This report includes documentation for nine watersheds and one area south of Georgian Bay (the Severn Sound drainage area), selected to implement the initial phase of the monitoring network. Additional watersheds are being added to the network which is planned for completion in 2003.
