GeoNames Ontario: Ontario's Geographic Names Database

The Government Translation Service is pleased to present the electronic version of the Bilingual Glossary of Ontario's Geographic Names. In response to numerous requests from our clients to make this useful information available to all, we have decided to post the Glossary on our site to expand the role of ONTERM as the official repository for Ontario government terminology in English and in French.

To access the GeoNames database, click on the GeoNames Index toolbar option.

We would like to thank the Provincial Georeferencing unit of the Ministry of Natural Resources for authorizing the posting of the Glossary on our site. The GeoNames database provides an official listing of all geographic names (some 57,000 entries) in both English and French along with the original principles and procedures that guide the use of Ontario's geographic names in French texts. GeoNames Ontario is part of a commitment by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Government Translation Service of the Ministry of Government Services, to provide services in response to the cultural needs, traditions and values of the Francophone community of Ontario in accordance with the French Language Services Act and to preserve the integrity of the official geographic naming standards of Ontario.

The Linguistic Treatment of French Geographic Names in Ontario, drafted by the interministerial task force in 1994, provides the general principles and procedures governing the different types of French geographic names as well as the more specific guidelines to be followed in special circumstances (i.e. maps, prose texts and road signs). An explanation of the contents listed under each heading in the database is found in the Help pages.

We wish to extend a special thanks to Mr. Jeff Ball, Mr. Derick Yorke and Mr. Brian Maloney from the Ministry of Natural Resources for their valuable assistance and expertise during the development of this on-line tool.

We invite users of the database to share their comments with the Provincial Georeferencing unit of the Ministry of Natural Resources, or the Terminology Unit of the Government Translation Service. Please address your comments to:
