Involving OWA

Annual Report
2004-05

What is the OWA?

The Office of the Worker Adviser (OWA) is an independent agency of the Ontario Ministry of Labour. The OWA provides free services to non-unionized injured workers and their survivors in workplace insurance matters (formerly called workers' compensation).

The OWA was established in 1985, along with the Office of the Employer Adviser (OEA) and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT).

The OWA is not part of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Summaries of Important OWA Cases
Now Available

We are pleased to announce a new feature on the OWA Website. We have selected and posted summaries of important Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) decisions where the OWA represented the worker.

The summaries are sorted by topic and provide links to the full text decisions on the WSIAT Website.

The decisions we have chosen are just a fraction of the thousands of appeals that the OWA has been involved with since it was created in 1985. Nevertheless, they highlight some of the many significant issues that the OWA routinely deals with. They also illustrate the contribution that the organization and its staff have made on behalf of injured workers in this province.

We encourage you to read the decision summaries. We hope they will help you understand the work of the OWA and our role in the workplace insurance system (formerly called workers' compensation) in Ontario.

Please note these decision summaries are not intended to be used for legal research. For complete up-to-date case law, please refer to the WSIAT Reporter and the WSIAT decision database found on the WSIAT Website.
