ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES CASE MANAGEMENT MASTERS

Two Case Management Masters To Preside In Toronto

TORONTO — Attorney General Michael Bryant today announced the appointment of two case management masters to the Superior Court of Justice, effective June 21, 2006.

"Case management masters are part of the government’s strategy to improve access to justice and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the justice system," said Bryant. "These new case management masters will help to resolve civil cases faster."

Benjamin Glustein was called to the Quebec Bar in 1990 and the Ontario Bar in 1993. He clerked for Justice L’Heureux-Dubé of the Supreme Court of Canada and practiced civil litigation at Ogilvy Renault in Montreal. Beginning in 1993, he practiced with the commercial and public law litigation group at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in Toronto. He has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Law School.

Andrew Graham was called to the Bar in 1985 and has worked as a civil litigation lawyer in Toronto for 21 years at Benson Percival Brown. He has acted in bilingual matters in the Superior Court and the Court of Appeal. Since 2004, he has also acted as a mediator. Graham has also been an instructor for the Civil Litigation and Advocacy sections of the Ontario Bar Admission Course.

Masters Glustein and Graham have been assigned to Toronto.

Case management masters work with judges of the Superior Court of Justice to manage civil caseloads by presiding at case and settlement conferences. They work to reduce the time required to process a civil trial by ensuring that cases proceed according to prescribed timelines.

The case management process gives parties in dispute opportunities to discuss issues in order to streamline proceedings and focus trial resources where they are most needed. It also allows early court intervention to promote the resolution of disputes or to bring cases to trial in a timely manner. Currently there are 13 case management masters serving in Windsor, Toronto and Ottawa.
