ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS

TORONTO — Attorney General Michael Bryant today announced the appointment of four provincial judges to the Ontario Court of Justice, effective June 21, 2006.

"These four qualified individuals who are joining the bench of the Ontario Court of Justice have the scope of experience that will allow them to make a significant contribution to the administration of justice," said Bryant.

Mr. Justice Stephen Brown was called to the Bar in 1981 and practiced law with a Markham law firm for 11 years. In 1992, he became a sole practitioner dealing exclusively in criminal law. He has also been a part-time assistant Crown attorney in Oshawa and chair of the area committee of Legal Aid Ontario in York Region. He was co-founder of the York Region Task Force for Restorative Justice and served on the steering committee for the York Region Youth Justice Committee. Chief Justice Brian W. Lennox has assigned Mr. Justice Brown to preside in Burlington.

Called to the Bar in 1979, Mr. Justice David Harris has litigated criminal and civil matters. He has been a part-time assistant Crown attorney for 20 years and is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in criminal law. He has been a standing agent for the Attorney General of Canada and a deputy judge of Small Claims Court. Justice Harris was also a member of the area committee of Legal Aid Ontario in Halton. He has been a speaker at legal and educational events for several law associations and schools, and published numerous articles for a local newspaper and on various criminal law subjects. Chief Justice Brian W. Lennox has assigned Mr. Justice Harris to preside in St. Catharines.

Madam Justice Eileen Martin was called to the Bar in 1981 and has practised family law for 25 years. Since 1987, most of her practice has involved Divorce Act and Family Law Act proceedings, as well as the drafting and negotiation of domestic contracts. She was co-chair of the St. Catharines Liaison Committee for the Unified Family Court and a member of the Unified Family Court – Local Implementation Committee. Justice Martin has been president of the Lincoln County Law Association and has presented papers on child support guidelines to the association. Chief Justice Brian W. Lennox has assigned Madam Justice Martin to preside in Welland.

Called to the Bar in 1977, Mr. Justice Joseph Nadel has served as an assistant Crown attorney in Hamilton since 1991 and before that was in private practice for 13 years. He has received the Doug Lucas Award for excellence in the pursuit of justice through science from the Ontario Crown Attorneys' Association. He has spoken to citizens groups and high schools and lectured police officers in Hamilton and Burlington on criminal law matters. Justice Nadel was a member of the Hamilton Law Association and the Ontario Crown Attorneys' Association. Chief Justice Brian W. Lennox has assigned Mr. Justice Nadel to preside in St. Catharines.

Bryant has appointed 50 judges since the McGuinty government was sworn in on October 23, 2003.
