ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES JUSTICE OF THE PEACE APPOINTMENTS


New Justices Of The Peace To Preside In Toronto and Kitchener

TORONTO — Attorney General Michael Bryant today announced the appointment of Arthur James Child, Ajit Kaur Singh Grewal, Odida Quamina, Jerry Rosenfield and Kirk Walstedt as justices of the peace, effective November 15, 2006.

“We are committed to improving access to justice for all Ontarians,” said Bryant.

Justice of the peace Child has been practising with the law firm Child Chaimovitz in Hamilton since 1987. He has been a speaker and presenter at various Hamilton Criminal Lawyers’ Association seminars and has served as a board member of the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Association of Burlington and Hamilton. Associate Chief Justice/Coordinator of Justices of the Peace Donald A. Ebbs has assigned justice of the peace Child to Kitchener.

Justice of the peace Grewal has been a member of the Immigration and Refugee Board since 2001. She was a licensed real estate representative and an accredited professional medical representative. She has been a member of the International Association of Refugee Law Judges and the Community Service Committee of the Royal St. George’s College. Associate Chief Justice/Co-ordinator of Justices of the Peace Donald A. Ebbs has assigned justice of the peace Grewal to Toronto.

Justice of the peace Quamina has been a part-time faculty member in Liberal Arts and Science at Humber College and the principal member of a mediation and consulting team. He created the Ombuds Office and was ombudsperson for five years at Seneca College. He has been vice-chair of the Social Assistance Review Board. Justice of the peace Quamina has been a member of the Ombuds Associations and the Association of Universities and Community Colleges Ombudspersons. Associate Chief Justice/Co-ordinator of Justices of the Peace Donald A. Ebbs has assigned justice of the peace Quamina to Toronto.

Justice of the peace Rosenfield has been an educator for the past 40 years, most recently as principal of the Associated Hebrew Schools of Toronto. He was a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals and is a former chair of the Association of Jewish Day School Principals of Greater Toronto. Associate Chief Justice/Co-ordinator of Justices of the Peace Donald A. Ebbs has assigned justice of the peace Rosenfield to Toronto.

Justice of the peace Walstedt is a lawyer who most recently was a partner with Walstedt Renick Municipal & Environmental Lawyers in Essex. He has chaired hearings of the Canadian Pension Plan/Old Age Security Appeals Tribunal, has been vice-chair of the Ontario Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal and has served as a member of the Board of Negotiation. Associate Chief Justice/Co-ordinator of Justices of the Peace Donald A. Ebbs has assigned justice of the peace Walstedt to Kitchener.

These appointments were made through an interim process, the first step in the government’s plan to transform the justice of the peace system. Further justice of the peace appointments are expected in the coming months.

On October 19, 2006 the Access to Justice Act was passed by the legislature and received Royal Assent.

The act provides for a more independent and transparent appointment process for justices of the peace and establishes minimum qualifications. It also allows retiring or retired justices of the peace to sit by special designation, to be assigned by the Court on a temporary basis to specific matters including Provincial Offences Act proceedings.
