Forestry and Mining

Ontario's forest industry is the economic lifeblood of more than 50 northern communities. It employs almost 90,000 people, and with sales of over $15 billion a year and exports exceeding $9 billion, it is one of Ontario's largest industries. Ontario is blessed with vast, sustainably managed forests - the foundation of this thriving forest products industry. By area, these forests represent about 17 per cent of Canada's forests and 2 per cent of the world's forests.

The Sudbury Basin contains one of the world's largest deposits of nickel and copper. Ontario's gold mines, most of which are located in Hemlo, Timmins and Red Lake, produce about one billion dollars worth of gold annually. Timmins is the site of a large copper/zinc deposit, and the Lac des Iles mine is the only platinum palladium mine in Canada. Information about mining and forestry can be found in "About Ontario".
